Why Did the Vinland Saga Anime Change Studios?
When season two was announced in July 2021, production had moved from Wit Studio to MAPPA. Studio changes usually scatter a staff; this one was closer to a transplant. Director Shūhei Yabuta returned, character designer Takahiko Abiru returned, and composer Yutaka Yamada returned, so the second season kept the first season’s face, timing, and sound while wearing a different studio’s name in the credits.
The documented story is continuity by intent rather than accident: the same core team is credited across the move, and the production companies around the series (Twin Engine, Production I.G, Kodansha among them) stayed in place. Neither studio has published a tell-all about the handover; what the record shows is a second season announced in 2021, delivered in 2023 by MAPPA, with the creative spine visibly intact.
For viewers the practical effect was simple: the farm years look and move like the war years’ sequel, not like a reboot. The fuller production story is on the anime page.
