Why Did Vinland Saga Leave Weekly Shōnen Magazine?

It did not fall out with the magazine. It outgrew the schedule.

Vinland Saga opened in Weekly Shōnen Magazine on April 13, 2005, a Viking revenge story in a boys’ weekly. After a two-month hiatus, it reappeared in the December 2005 issue of Monthly Afternoon, Kodansha’s seinen magazine for adult men, and stayed there for the remaining twenty years.

The reason was the calendar, not the content. Yukimura has said he could not maintain a weekly pace at the level of detail he wanted: his chapters ran to about thirty pages of dense, researched drawing, produced with a small team of assistants across very long days. A monthly slot traded speed for finish.

The move quietly changed the book’s centre of gravity. In Afternoon, a story about a boy demanding duels could afford to become a story about a man refusing them. Kodansha marked the transfer in print: volumes 1 and 2, first issued under Shōnen Magazine Comics, were reissued under Afternoon KC in 2006 with new covers, the pair compared in the gallery.
