Why Was the Neo Geo So Expensive?

Yes: $649.99 for the console and $200 and up per game, because SNK refused to shrink the arcade to fit the home.

The Neo Geo AES was the most expensive home console of its time even after adjusting for inflation, and its games cost two to four times what rival consoles charged. The price was not a markup on an ordinary machine. It was the bill for a design decision: the home system would be the arcade system, with the same board, the same code, and cartridges large enough to hold an entire arcade game.

THE NUMBERS

What SNK actually charged

SNK first offered the AES in Japan only as a rental system, judging the manufacturing cost too high for retail, and reversed itself when customers said they would pay. In North America the debut price was planned at $599 with two joystick controllers and a game, then raised: the Gold System launched at $649.99 (about $1,536 in 2025 dollars on the record's own conversion), and a Silver System followed at $399.99 with one controller and no game. Games launched at about $200 and up each. Inside were a Motorola 68000 at 12 MHz, a Zilog Z80 coprocessor, a Yamaha YM2610 sound chip, and cartridges that began at a 330 megabit ceiling and later reached about 716 megabits with bank switching, at a time when ordinary console cartridges were a small fraction of that size. Memory chips were the cost, and SNK bought more of them per game than anyone else in the home market.

The bet underneath the price was that the arcade would pay for the home machine. Because the AES ran the identical hardware as the MVS, SNK spent nothing extra on porting or marketing its home editions: the arcade library fed the console automatically, which the record credits with making the AES profitable despite selling only 410,000 units against about one million MVS systems. The full hardware story is on the history of the Neo Geo.
