Wolf's Rain in English: the Bandai release

Bandai sold Wolf's Rain the way few anime were sold in 2004, and it made them Anime Company of the Year.

Bandai Entertainment licensed Wolf's Rain for North America and released the complete thirty episodes, OVAs included, across seven DVD volumes. The television premiere came first: in 2004 the series aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, in a run that quietly omitted the four recap episodes, so American viewers met a tighter show than Japan had. The dub, led by Johnny Yong Bosch as Kiba and Crispin Freeman as Tsume, is still the version a generation of fans hears in their heads.

The release was a commercial event. The series sold well in mass market and specialty retail alike, and the industry journal ICv2 records that Wolf's Rain was a central reason Bandai won its Anime Company of the Year award for 2004; the show was also named one of the top ten anime properties of 2005. Bandai issued the first soundtrack album in the United States on May 11, 2004, a serious gesture for the time. The second album, the one with the ending in it, was never licensed in America at all, a gap American collectors have been importing around ever since.

The rest of the English-speaking world split the difference: Beez Entertainment handled Europe, including a box set that bundled the first soundtrack CD, and Madman released the whole thirty episodes as a complete collection in Australia and New Zealand. After Bandai Entertainment's closure, Funimation rescued the license and brought the series to Blu-ray in 2017.

THE AMERICAN SHELF

What Bandai actually shipped
Seven volumes
The full thirty episodes across seven DVDs. Reviewers praised the release and advised one specific skip: the single volume that holds all four recap episodes.
The limited first volume
Volume 1 also came in a limited edition with an art box to hold the series, a Kiba plush, and the first soundtrack CD. It is the centerpiece of any Wolf's Rain collection.
The soundtrack, May 11, 2004
Bandai's US edition of the first OST. The second OST stayed Japan-only, Victor Entertainment only, then and now.
Anime Legends
Bandai later reissued the series in its budget Anime Legends line as a two-part collection, the form in which many later fans first owned it.
