The Napishtim Engine Trilogy
Three games, one engine, and the decade Ys became modern.
After eight quiet years, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (2003) restarted the series: full 3D, a sword button, jumping, and a speed that felt like the bump era translated into reflexes. Konami carried the PS2 and PSP versions west in 2005, the first new Ys the West had seen in over a decade; XSEED's 2015 PC release restored Falcom's own text.
The engine's other two children define it. The Oath in Felghana (2005) rebuilt Ys III on it, and Ys Origin (2006), a prequel set seven hundred years before Ys I atop Darm Tower, is the one main entry where Adol is not the hero: Yunica, Hugo, and a third, hidden protagonist climb the tower Adol would one day climb down from.
ONE ENGINE, THREE TEMPERAMENTS
2003 · 2005 · 2006The Ark
A shipwreck, a vortex of islands, and the series' first true 3D world: VI is the restart everything modern in Ys descends from.
The Oath
The remake as masterpiece: see the Felghana page for the full story of the side-scroller rebuilt into a fan consensus favourite.
Origin
A tower, three climbers, and the goddesses as young knights: Origin is the lore keystone of the whole series, and its illustrator Shunsuke Taue's art carried into the Ys Tribute book years later.
