Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

The underdog's breakthrough was a shipwreck.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana launched in Japan in 2016 on PlayStation Vita, then PS4 and nearly everything else. Adol washes up on the cursed Isle of Seiren, gathers fellow castaways into a growing village, and dreams himself into the life of Dana, a maiden of the ancient Eternian civilisation, two stories braided across thousands of years. It is the longest, warmest, and most decorated game in the series.

Its Western release by NIS America became a story of its own: the first localization was criticized so sharply that NIS took the unusual step of re-translating the game and patching it in early 2018, an apology in the form of a second script. The game that emerged is the one that, by wide agreement, carried Ys to its largest audience ever.

THE ISLAND AND THE MAIDEN

Two stories, one map
Castaway village
Every rescued survivor joins the village and opens a service, a shop, a farm, a doctor: the base grows as the map does, and the cast becomes a community rather than a party list.
Dana
The Eternian chapters play differently, a lone, faster, sadder game inside the game, and they reframe everything the castaways are standing on.
The second script
The re-localization is now part of the game's legend: a publisher publicly redoing its own translation is nearly unheard of, and the Ys faithful have not forgotten which way NIS chose.
