Are Persona covers the same in Japanese and English?
The early series set the pattern of divergence. Revelations: Persona's Japanese and North American PlayStation covers present different art and different branding, with the Western release renamed outright, and Persona 2's Eternal Punishment similarly restyled its packaging for the West, including character naming changes that reached the cover credits and manual. In that era Atlus's Western arm treated packaging as localization, not reproduction.
Persona 3 is the comparison most often asked about: the Japanese cover is a restrained composition built around the protagonist and the game's blue palette, while the Western cover pushes the full cast forward in a busier action arrangement. Both use Soejima's art, but they are different pieces selling the same game to different shelves, and side by side they show the two markets' instincts in 2006 and 2007.
From Persona 4 onward the art converges more often, with shared key art appearing across regions, but layout, logos, age ratings and platform banners still change the object. Golden's Vita covers, Persona 5's standard art and Royal's key visual travel well, yet even there the Japanese Persona 5 cover and the Western one present the cast differently, and SteelBook and limited editions diverge completely by design.
The remake era adds another layer: Persona 3 Reload and the modern ports use unified global key art more often than the PlayStation 2 games did, reflecting a series that now launches near simultaneously worldwide. The older the Persona game, the more likely its covers are genuinely different artworks rather than variants of one layout.
For a collector the rule is simple: never assume a cover. The Japanese and Western editions of the same Persona game are separate objects with separate art histories, and a shelf that holds both is documenting the series' journey from a localized niche release to a global brand. This page is the hub for those comparisons; individual game entries in this shelf carry their own cover notes.
