Are Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver covers the same in Japan and the West?
The artwork carries over unchanged. Ho-Oh fronts HeartGold and Lugia fronts SoulSilver in Japan and in the West, the same legendary portraits Gold and Silver's mascots had earned a decade earlier, redrawn for the remakes. As with Diamond and Pearl, what changes between regions is the furniture around the painting: Pocket Monsters branding and a CERO mark in Japan, the international Pokémon logo and ESRB or PEGI marks in the West.
The object is the interesting part. HeartGold and SoulSilver did not ship in a standard DS case anywhere. Every region's release came in an oversized outer box, because every copy included the Pokéwalker pedometer alongside the cartridge, and the box fronts in both regions make room to advertise the second piece of hardware riding inside.
That makes this pair a small landmark in the Library's terms: a remake whose packaging is identical in concept worldwide, a box designed around an accessory rather than a game alone. Japanese and Western copies differ in print details, not in the promise on the front.
On a shelf the two regional boxes sit as natural pairs, the same Ho-Oh twice over, one announcing the walker in Japanese and one in English. The pictured pair shows the branding split; the art needs no translation.
