Are Slam Dunk covers the same in Japan and America?
Mostly, with one large exception. Viz Media's English edition reproduces the original Jump Comics tankobon covers, the paintings and compositions Inoue made in the 1990s, with English logos and trade dress. Put a Japanese volume 1 and an American volume 1 side by side and you are looking at the same illustration wearing different type.
The exception is the 2018 shinsoban. For that edition Inoue drew twenty entirely new covers, older, looser and more painterly, and those images have never fronted an English print edition. English digital readers met the shinsoban structure only in June 2025, when Slam Dunk went digital for the first time using the 20-volume reorganization.
So the cover shelf splits cleanly: the 1990s art is shared across languages, the kanzenban covers of 2001 and 2002 are Japanese only, and the 2018 redraws are Japanese only. A collector who wants every Inoue cover is collecting Japanese books.
