Collecting Hellsing

A short, complete series with a long paper trail: the hunt is not the ten volumes, it is everything around them.

Hellsing is a collector-friendly shape: ten volumes, finished, kept in print in Japan and reprinted twice over in English. The genuinely scarce paper is at the edges: Hirano’s doujin-era work, the magazine issues, the unfinished prequel, and the exhibition art books.

THE CORE SHELF

The ten volumes and their companions
Japanese tankobon
All ten Young King Comics volumes remain in print in Japan, listed at ¥792 with tax, so a reading set is cheap. Collecting sharpens on condition: the obi strip, the dust jacket, and the second Hirano illustration printed on the boards beneath it.
The Official Guidebook
Hellsing Official Guidebook, released March 30, 2012: character biographies the series never gave, staff roundtables, and two Pafu magazine interviews with Hirano plus a new one. The shelf’s standard companion.
The art books
Three Shonengahosha art books: the Illustration Selection booklet bundled with the March 2006 issue of Young King OURs, the 2020 Original Art Exhibition official art book, and the 2025 Super Expo rough drawing archive. The exhibition books were event-sold first, wider after.

THE SCARCE PAPER

Where the hunting is
Young King OURs, issue 27
The May 1997 issue carrying chapter 1, on sale April 30, 1997. Magazine issues of a monthly seinen title were read and discarded; a clean copy is the series’ true first appearance.
Comic Kairakuten, October 1996
The prototype one-shot’s only original home. Adult magazines survive in far smaller numbers than the series they seeded.
The Dawn chapters
Six chapters across Young King OURs Zokan and OURs Plus issues of 2002 to 2006, never collected. A complete set of the host issues is the only complete Dawn there is.
Hirano’s early works
Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania, Hi-Tension and the GUY-YA doujinshi: small print runs, and the documented origin of the Hellsing cast’s designs. Reference sources flatly call them collector’s items now.

THE ENGLISH SHELF

Two editions and a hardcover set
First edition singles
Dark Horse, 2003 to 2010, ISBNs in the 1-59307 and 1-59582 blocks. The late volumes had the smallest runs of the set’s life; volume 10 spent five weeks on the New York Times manga list.
Second edition singles
The 2023 to 2025 reprints, ISBNs in the 1-50673 block, are the in-print reading copies, not the collectible ones.
Deluxe hardcovers
The three 2020 to 2021 volumes are the display set: magazine size, sewn bindings, ribbon markers. Retail listings distinguish first printings from reprints, which is the sign of a book the market grades.
