Collecting Pikmin: games, merchandise, and art

Pikmin is one of the most completable Nintendo series to collect: four mainline games in both regions, two spin offs, a focused guide shelf, and merchandise led by plush Pikmin in every colour.

Start with the spine: the four mainline games. The GameCube originals, Pikmin and Pikmin 2, are the value centre, best collected complete with manuals, in Japanese and Western editions if the budget allows, since Pikmin 2 treasures differ by region and the pair of catalogues is a collecting story in itself. Pikmin 3 exists as the scarcer Wii U original and the common Deluxe on Switch. Pikmin 4 is current and cheap. Add Hey! Pikmin and the Olimar amiibo, the Wii New Play Control pair, and the Switch 1+2 bundle, and the playable series is complete in about ten boxes.

The guide shelf is the second pillar, and it is short enough to finish: Japanese guides for each mainline game, with the Pikmin 2 volumes the prize, plus the Western Prima and Nintendo Power books for the GameCube years. The guides carry the official creature and world art at print quality, which matters because Pikmin standalone art books are rare. For this series, the guidebooks are the art books, a fact seasoned Nintendo collectors confirm across several franchises.

Merchandise is where Pikmin overflows its small game count. Japan has produced plush of every Pikmin type across many waves, from the early 2000s Sanei and San-ei Boeki lines to the current Nintendo store ranges, plus figures, garden goods, straps, and the Ai no Uta CD singles from the launch era. Plush collecting runs by type and by maker era, and early GameCube era goods, when the series was a cult, are the scarce tier.

The art itself rewards attention. Pikmin official illustration, watercolour soft, botanical, and funny, appears on Japanese box art, guide covers, and merchandise tags more than in galleries or exhibitions. A framed Japanese Pikmin 2 guide cover or launch poster carries the series whole aesthetic in one image: a tiny captain, a loyal garden, and a world far bigger than both of them.
