Collecting Vagrant Story

Two discs or it is not complete: the North American copy hides its second half in plain sight.

The census is short, because the game was reissued rather than franchised. Japan came first, February 10, 2000, a single disc (SLPS-02377) in the pale box pictured on the gallery page, then two budget lives: PS one Books on February 21, 2002 at 2,500 yen plus tax, and Ultimate Hits on July 20, 2006 at 1,500 yen plus tax, prices preserved on Square Enix’s own product page. North America followed on May 16, 2000 as part of Square’s Summer of Adventure, published by Square Electronic Arts, and it is the collector’s edition by accident: a two-disc package whose second disc is the SQUARESOFT 2000 Collector’s CD, carrying playable demos of Chocobo Racing, Front Mission 3 and Threads of Fate and preview movies of Chrono Cross, SaGa Frontier 2, Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 and Legend of Mana. A Greatest Hits pressing followed in 2003. Europe got the game on June 21, 2000, and only the game: the PAL package has no demo disc.

Around the discs sit the satellites. Japan had earlier received a taste the other way round, a Vagrant Story demo disc packed with Legend of Mana. The North American launch produced the E3 2000 comic, a short giveaway drawn by Steve Firchow, Clarence Lansang and Michael Turner. The soundtrack is a two-CD set (DigiCube SSCX-10042, March 8, 2000) whose Square Enix reissue of March 24, 2006 (SQEX-10068/9) quietly differs, its PlayStation synth reverb removed; official merchandise of the era ran to jewellery, T-shirts, cigarette lighters and posters. Digitally the game reached Japan’s Game Archives on August 12, 2009 and the North American PlayStation Store in March 2011.

The price record below is dated history, not a valuation: it is drawn from sales recorded in October 2026 and will drift. What it shows is a stable cult market: the disc alone trades like a common classic, and completeness, the second disc, the manual, the registration card, is where the money concentrates.

THE PRICE RECORD

Sales recorded October 2026, via PriceCharting
Disc only
Loose game discs clustered between about 40 and 62 dollars across thirty recorded sales, with outliers from 25 dollars to a 125 dollar outlier copy.
Complete, black label
Copies with box, manual and both discs clustered between about 105 and 140 dollars, inside a recorded range of roughly 78 to 150 dollars. The second disc is the difference between the two rows of this table.
The guide
Birlew’s BradyGames book: loose copies around 19 dollars, copies with the poster around 40, on the guide’s own price record.
A Canadian footnote
The North American release was delayed in Canada by a Quebec ruling requiring French and English instructions in the package: a small, documented wrinkle for anyone dating an early North American copy.

SPOTTING A COMPLETE COPY

Field marks
Count the discs
A North American copy with one disc is a game disc in a box. The Collector’s CD should sit beside SLUS-01040, whose number is even printed on the front cover, under the Teen rating.
Read the back
The North American back cover advertises the preview disc in its bullet points and carries the barcode 6 62248 90002 5. If the back does not mention a preview disc, it is not the North American package.
Green means later
The Greatest Hits pressing wears the green budget label. It is the same game from 2003 onward, and the market prices it below the black label two-disc original.
