The Vagrant Story Gallery

One painting, two temperatures: Japan printed a ghost, America printed the ink.

Both 2000 boxes of Vagrant Story carry the same illustration: Ashley Riot and Sydney Losstarot back to back, Ashley in front with his looped hair ornaments, Sydney behind with his long hair bound up, and the title lettering speared through by a sword where the T should be. What differs is how hard each publisher leaned on the painting.

The Japanese box washes the art almost to white, two pale figures dissolving into a blank field, with only the small katakana title above the logo for company. The North American box runs the identical art at full strength, warm parchment tones, the tattoo on Ashley’s chest legible, and then adds the furniture of a sales pitch: the black PlayStation spine strip, a Teen rating, a red 2 discs badge, and catalog number SLUS-01040 printed under the rating.

Flip the American box over and the pitch continues: the headline Agent of the Crown, a crossbow portrait of Callo Merlose, a screenshot carrying a comic style speech balloon, and a bullet point advertising the SQUARESOFT preview disc packed inside. This page documents the boxes as objects; the Library’s collecting page censuses every edition they belong to.

THE TWO BOXES

The same art, February and May 2000

Ashley and Sydney, twice

Same painting · opposite print decisions
Vagrant Story Japanese PlayStation box art, pale washed illustration of Ashley Riot and Sydney Losstarot
Japan · February 10, 2000Square’s home box: the illustration bleached toward white, the katakana title small above the logo, no rating, no badges, no copy.
Vagrant Story North American PlayStation box art, Ashley Riot and Sydney Losstarot at full colour with PlayStation spine strip and Teen rating
North America · May 16, 2000Square Electronic Arts’ box: the same painting at full ink, plus the black spine strip, Teen rating, 2 discs badge and the SQUARESOFT wordmark.

The pair is the whole argument for keeping both. Neither box is a redraw; they are two printings of one piece of art, and the difference between them is purely a decision about how a dark game should sit on a shelf: as a rumour, or as a promise.

THE OBJECTS AROUND THEM

Discs, backs and paper
Vagrant Story North American back cover, Agent of the Crown headline and preview disc bullet point
The American back cover
Headline: Agent of the Crown. Selling points: a dark cinematic adventure, revolutionary battle and status systems, and the included SQUARESOFT preview disc with playable demos.
The second disc
North America alone got a bonus: a SQUARESOFT 2000 Collector’s CD with playable demos of Chocobo Racing, Front Mission 3 and Threads of Fate, and preview movies of Chrono Cross, SaGa Frontier 2, Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 and Legend of Mana.
The Japanese single disc
Japan’s release, catalog SLPS-02377, is one disc in the pale box. Europe’s PAL release of June 21, 2000 is also a single disc: the European packaging did not include the demo disc.
The E3 comic
For the North American launch, Eruptor Entertainment and Squaresoft gave away a short Vagrant Story comic at E3 2000, drawn by Top Cow hands Steve Firchow, Clarence Lansang and Michael Turner, carrying an interview with director Yasumi Matsuno.
