The first Diablo books and the Diablo Archive
Diablo fiction began quietly. Demonsbane by Robert B. Marks appeared in 2000 as an e-novella, the first Diablo book, recorded at 9780743418997. It had no standalone print edition at all. Readers who wanted it on paper had to wait for the omnibus era, which is why so many collectors meet the first Diablo story inside a much later book.
The Pocket Books print era proper opened with Legacy of Blood in 2001, then Mel Odom's The Black Road in 2002, first edition 9780743426916, Blizzard Legends reissue 9781945683121. The Black Road follows the mercenary Darrick Lang and remains the only Diablo novel by Odom, a different voice in the line: less cosmic, more grounded in Sanctuary's roads, inns and paid swords. A further trade paperback listing for a 2002 Pocket printing shows 9780671041540, noted in the census alongside the primary record.
The Kingdom of Shadow, also 2002, completed the early core, and Moon of the Spider followed in 2006. In 2008 Pocket Books gathered the first four novels into a single 752 page trade paperback, the Diablo Archive, 9781416576990, collecting Demonsbane, Legacy of Blood, The Black Road and The Kingdom of Shadow. The Archive is out of print per the census, but it remains common secondhand and is the standard reading copy for the early line.
That structure shapes collecting today. The Archive is one object with one ISBN; the individual novels exist as Pocket Books first printings and as Blizzard Legends reissues with different ISBNs and covers. A shelf can honestly hold both, but a listing that mixes them should be priced as mixed.
No Japanese editions of any of these early books exist. The census records jp_exists as false for every Diablo novel, verified rather than assumed.
