Diablo III era novels: The Order and Storm of Light

Kenyon wrote the bridge into Diablo III and the bridge out of it. Two novels, both still the core prose of that era.

When Diablo returned in 2012, its novels were written by Nate Kenyon. Diablo III: The Order, published by Gallery Books and Pocket Books, is a Deckard Cain novel: the last Horadrim scholar travelling Sanctuary gathering the scattered members of his order as the signs of the End of Days gather. The hardcover of 2012 is 9781416550785, the paperback of 2013 is 9781451645651, and a Blizzard reissue followed in 2021 at 9781950366514.

Storm of Light, 2014, is the sequel in spirit and the bridge between Diablo III and its expansion Reaper of Souls. It follows the Crusader and the reformed Horadrim as the Black Soulstone's fate is decided. The census records the trade paperback at 9781416550808. Note that 9781476739847, sometimes seen in listings, is the ebook ISBN, a different format, and is not the print identifier for this book.

Kenyon's pair are the most game connected of the Diablo novels. Cain's journal material in The Order feeds directly into the Book of Cain lore tome, and Storm of Light explains on the page transitions that the games only gesture at. Readers who want the Diablo III story told slowly, with its scholars and crusaders given room, start here.

Around the two novels sit two shorter Diablo III works recorded in the census and covered fully on the anthologies page: the 2012 story collection Heroes Rise, Darkness Falls, 9781416550907, and the 2014 e-novella Morbed, 9781476789460. Both were digital first publications, which is why clean print copies are not a thing to hunt for.

No Japanese editions of The Order or Storm of Light exist. As with the rest of the line, the census verified English only publication for both titles.
