The Dorohedoro Manga Gallery

Twenty-three painted covers, one pair of hands, eighteen years of weather.

This is the paper shelf: every Japanese tankobon cover of Dorohedoro, the complete Ikki Comix run from 2002 to 2018. Q Hayashida painted each cover herself. She works without assistants, and the covers are part of that same single-handed labour, not a separate commission.

The title means something close to mud and sludge, and the books look like it: textured grounds, snakeskin, gingham, bare colour fields, and a brush-stroke logo that changes colour on every volume. The cast rotates across the covers like a repertory company. The run opens and closes on the same two people.

THE FIRST AND THE LAST

Dorohedoro, 2002 and 2018

Volume 1 and volume 23

First and last · sixteen years apart
Dorohedoro volume 1 Japanese cover, Kaiman in red against a snakeskin pattern
Volume 1 · 2002Kaiman alone, in the gas mask, against a snakeskin ground. The whole series in one figure.
Dorohedoro volume 23 Japanese cover, Nikaido waving beside Kaiman
Volume 23 · 2018The final cover: Nikaido waving at the reader, Kaiman beside her in working clothes, the Gyoza Fairy at their feet.

Hayashida opens the run with her hero masked and alone, and closes it with the mask off the story: the two friends side by side, saying goodbye. Every cover between them is a portrait of one or two cast members, painted by the same hand that drew the pages.

READING THE COVERS

What the grids show
The logo
Her own brush lettering, laid across the figure and recoloured on every volume: black, red, green, yellow, white. No two covers wear the same colour, and the lettering never moves.
The credit
Every cover carries the same corner credit, her name in kanji with Q-HAYASHIDA beneath it, and no other name. One author, one artist, one credit line, twenty-three times.
The paint
The covers are paintings, not coloured line art: oil-painting training shows in the built-up grounds and the way figures sit in weather. Volume 2 hides its portrait in rain and shadow; volume 22 gives the cover to the city itself.
The bookends
Kaiman stands alone on volume 1 and nearly alone on volume 11, as Aikawa. The final cover is the only group farewell: Kaiman, Nikaido and the Gyoza Fairy, waving out.
