Fairy Tail in Weekly Shōnen Magazine
One magazine carried the guild for eleven years, then welcomed it back at twenty.
Before it was a shelf of books, Fairy Tail was a weekly appointment in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, Kodansha's flagship shōnen anthology, from August 2, 2006 to July 26, 2017. All three of Mashima's long serials lived in the same magazine, which makes his career a case study in what a single anthology can hold.
The collected volumes are what collectors shelve, but the magazine years are where the series' habits were set: the relentless weekly pace, the crossovers with stablemates, and the anniversary returns.
INSIDE WEEKLY SHŌNEN MAGAZINE
The guild's first homeThe debut, August 2, 2006
Chapter 1 appeared in the magazine's summer issues of 2006, four years after the Fairy Tale one-shot in Magazine Fresh. Mashima was 29 and already the magazine's proven hand, one year off finishing Rave Master.
A second job in the same pages
While drawing Fairy Tail weekly, Mashima also wrote Monster Hunter Orage monthly (2008–2009) and, in 2008, redrew Atsushi Kase's Chameleon for the magazine's 50th anniversary. The magazine was not just his publisher; it was his whole working world.
The crossover issues
The magazine used its star property socially: a Fairy Tail × Flunk Punk Rumble one-shot with his former assistant Miki Yoshikawa (2008), a Fairy Tail × Rave chapter (2011), and a two-way crossover with The Seven Deadly Sins in December 2013, each artist drawing the other's cast.
The finale, July 26, 2017
The last chapter ran in the magazine on July 26, 2017, closing 545 chapters. The sequel's first chapter would be printed in the magazine a year later, as a bridge, before moving to the app.
The return, 2026
For the twentieth anniversary the guild came home: Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from July 29 to September 30, 2026, Mashima drawing in the magazine where all three of his serials were born.
