The Hokuto no Ken manga gallery

Twenty-seven painted covers, five years, one unbroken run of them.

This is the complete first edition of the manga as Japanese readers first collected it: the Jump Comics tankōbon, published by Shueisha from March 1984 to March 1989, a volume roughly every two months while the serial still ran. Buronson wrote them; Tetsuo Hara painted every cover.

The set is famous on sight: the banner masthead, the volume title in the corner triangle, and a full painting underneath, Kenshiro and his enemies modelled like film posters. Later editions re-drew these covers more than once, which is exactly why the originals are documented here on their own, in order, with their dates.

The first cover, and the shelf it built

All twenty-seven, verified against the books themselves
Hokuto no Ken volume 1 Jump Comics cover, Kenshiro under lightning
Jump Comics · 1984Volume 1: Kenshiro in the storm, the first of the painted covers.
The spines of all 27 Jump Comics volumes of Hokuto no Ken in sequence
The full run · 1984 to 1989All twenty-seven spines in order: the rainbow band of the Jump Comics set.

Every cover below is the original Jump Comics edition, Shueisha, 1984 to 1989, checked volume by volume against the published books, their printed numbers and their release dates. Tetsuo Hara painted these covers while drawing twenty pages a week; together they are the visual signature of 1980s Jump.

READING THE COVERS

What the gallery does and does not claim
27 of 27 verified
Each cover image was matched against the printed volume number on the book itself and against Shueisha’s release record. Nothing here is a mock-up or a later edition’s art.
The covers were redrawn twice
Gutsoon’s English Master Edition commissioned new Hara covers from its fourth volume, and the 2013 Kyūkyokuban Ultimate Edition gave all eighteen of its volumes new Hara paintings. Those are different art for the same chapters, documented on this archive’s editions pages.
Painted, not screened
While most Jump covers of the era were flat color over line art, Hara’s Hokuto covers are full paintings, faces modelled in oils-and-ink density. It is a large part of why the set is collected as art, not only as books.
