How can you play Mother 3 in English?

Every route runs through Japan: the cartridge and the patch, or the subscription and the language it was written in.

Start with the fixed fact: there is no official English version of Mother 3. Nintendo has never localized it, for the business reasons its executives have described on the record, so an English playthrough is necessarily a fan-mediated one.

The standard route is the one the community built in 2008. A player needs the Japanese Game Boy Advance game, physical cartridge or otherwise obtained ROM, and applies the free Mother 3 fan translation patch from the Starmen.net team, maintained through version 1.3 of April 2021. The patch is applied to the game data; the cartridge itself is never altered, and the same Japanese cartridge, unpatched, is the collector's object this Library documents.

The official route exists but keeps the language. Mother 3 sits in the Japanese Game Boy Advance library of Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack, added February 21, 2024, playable anywhere through a Japanese Nintendo Account, entirely in Japanese. It had the same Japan-only run on the Wii U Virtual Console from December 2015.

The supporting shelf is English even when the game is not: Fangamer's Mother 3 Handbook guides a playthrough in English, and Clyde Mandelin's Legends of Localization notes annotate the translation's choices scene by scene. Between the patch, the handbook and the notes, the English Mother 3 is a small library of its own, all of it fan-made, all of it shelved here.
