Who are the Magypsies in Mother 3?

Mother 3's keepers of the end of the world: immortal, kind, theatrical, and each named after a chord change.

The Magypsies are seven beings who have guarded the seven Needles sealing the Dark Dragon beneath the Nowhere Islands for thousands of years. Ageless, flamboyant and kind, they live in shells and cottages at the island's edges, speak with theatrical warmth, and serve as the story's foster family: it is a Magypsy, Ionia, who finds and raises the lost Claus, and their homes are the game's places of safety.

Their names carry Itoi's music habit into the cast list. Aeolia, Doria, Lydia, Phrygia, Mixolydia and Ionia are named for musical modes, the scales of ancient Greek music theory that also name jazz standards, while the seventh, Locria, bears the rarest mode of all, a musicological in-joke about the one who does not fit. The band name in the same game, DCMC, expands to Desperado Crush Mambo Combo; Mother 3 hides its credits in its nouns.

In the localization debate the Magypsies are the most-cited content question, and the documented record deserves care: a 2019 allegation claimed Nintendo feared controversy around elements of the game, the Magypsies often named in such retellings, while Reggie Fils-Aimé stated in 2022 that content was not the issue and the decision was commercial. This Library reports both where they belong, on the testimony page; the Magypsies themselves remain what Itoi wrote: the oldest, kindest people in the story.

As design they are the series in one image: figures a censor might puzzle over, drawn entirely without mockery, guarding the apocalypse with hospitality.
