How Can You Watch Kawajiri’s Films Today?
The revival began with an anniversary. For Ninja Scroll’s thirtieth, Sentai and Iconic Events brought the film back to American and Canadian cinemas on 11, 12 and 15 September 2024, in the AX Cinema Nights series, playing in more than five hundred theatres, subtitled one night and dubbed the next. Sentai followed it with a limited steelbook Blu-ray in October 2024, and the film joined HIDIVE that November.
Then came the restoration. Sentai produced a 4K version from a scan of the original 35mm negative, repaired and colour-corrected under Kawajiri’s own supervision. Its world premiere was on 15 February 2026 at the Berlin International Film Festival, in Berlinale Classics: the first anime film ever selected for that section. North American audiences saw the 4K in theatres on 4, 5 and 7 October 2026, and a limited edition 4K UHD steelbook is due in early 2027.
Bloodlust is on the same road, one step behind. Japan restored it from its 35mm negative with a theatrical revival and a remastered Blu-ray; GKIDS has now taken the North American theatrical and home video rights, with subtitled screenings in the autumn of 2026 ahead of a full theatrical and home entertainment rollout in 2027.
The Kikuchi pair are settled catalogue titles. Demon City Shinjuku streams on HIDIVE under Sentai’s digital license and sits on Discotek’s 2020 Blu-ray; Wicked City is Discotek’s as well, uncut, with both of its English dubs. Every film on this shelf is easier to see well in 2026 than at any time since its release.
