How Do Langrisser’s Commanders and Classes Work?

You do not level up a hero in Langrisser. You promote an officer, and his whole army changes with him.

Every tactical RPG of the 1990s gave you a party. Langrisser gave you a chain of command. Your characters are officers: before each scenario they spend gold to hire troops, up to eight per commander, each troop standing for ten soldiers, so a full force runs past thirty units a side. Troops are bought, spent, and replaced. The commander is the permanent piece, and the class tree is where he grows.

The system has three moving parts: the command radius that makes position matter, the affinity web that makes matchups matter, and the branching promotions that make every commander a small build project. They interlock, and together they are why this series plays like nothing else of its era.

THE COMMANDER SYSTEM

Hired swords and radii
Hire before battle
Gold is spent at the outset of each scenario. A commander’s class fixes what he can hire and what it costs: griffons answer only to a Dragon Knight. Survivors refund part of their price afterward.
The command radius
A commander’s class sets the radius of his command range. Troops fighting inside it gain bonuses to attack and defense: an army is strongest gathered around its officer.
Care and feeding
Troops positioned directly around their commander recover health each turn, and commanders themselves can heal, three points of health (and, in later games, two of magic) by command. Formation is logistics.

THE AFFINITY WEB

Who beats whom
The triangle
Soldiers beat pikemen, pikemen beat cavalry, cavalry beat soldiers: the infantry web every battle is fought inside.
Above and below
Fliers are strong against soldiers but weak to bowmen. Holy units are strong against demons. Seafaring units gain the advantage attacking from water.
Why it matters
Because troops are hired fresh each scenario, the web is a shopping decision as much as a fighting one: you buy the counter to what the map shows you.

THE CLASS TREES

Promotion as authorship
Experience promotes
From Warsong onward, a commander who wins experience promotes to a more powerful class, gaining spells, abilities, and better troops to hire. A fallen hero in the first game is gone forever.
Trees, not ladders
In Der Langrisser each character’s promotions branch into a personal tree, and the official guidebook documents hidden classes at its top that the game never announces. Two players’ Erwins end a campaign in different armor.
The questionnaire
Langrisser IV builds the tree into the fiction: the hero’s class growth is set by the answers you give to an opening questionnaire.
The system survives
Langrisser Mobile kept the structure whole: heroes still advance along class trees and take the field with soldiers at their side, the feature its makers refused to water down.
