How long is Ranma 1/2?
The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996, totaling 407 chapters collected in 38 tankobon volumes. It is a complete, finished story: Takahashi ended it on her own schedule with the Jusenkyo finale and the wedding arc, which makes Ranma a closed shelf in a medium full of open ended commitments.
The 1989 anime totals 161 television episodes across its two broadcast lives, 18 episodes in the first series and 143 in Nettohen, plus three theatrical films and twelve OVA episodes. Despite that volume, it adapts only part of the manga, ending years before Takahashi did and leaving the final arcs unanimated in that production line.
The 2024 MAPPA remake restarts the count. Its first season covered the manga's opening movement in twelve episodes at a much faster pace than 1989, and a second season followed in 2025. Even at remake speed, the full manga represents several seasons of material, including the late arcs no screen version has reached.
Reading time is part of the measure. Ranma's chapters are short, gag driven and brisk; experienced readers pace the 38 volumes in weeks rather than months, and the episodic structure makes it an easy series to read in parallel with longer, heavier titles, one reason it survives as a comfort reread for its generation of fans.
For collectors, the counts define three complete or completable sets: the closed 38 volume manga, the closed 1989 screen catalog in its Japanese box sets, and the open remake catalog. Knowing which set a piece belongs to is the first step of any Ranma purchase.
