How many Pokémon could you catch in Ruby and Sapphire?
Ruby and Sapphire's regional Pokédex, the Hoenn Pokédex, lists 202 Pokémon. The full National Pokédex of the era runs to 386, which means 184 species simply do not exist in Hoenn's grass, water or caves, and no amount of patience in a single cartridge produces them.
The missing majority is the generation's design. Some lived in Kanto's remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen. Some waited on the GameCube, in Colosseum and its bonus discs. Some hung behind the era's tickets and downloads, the islands and events documented across this cluster. Completing the National Pokédex in Generation III was not a solo achievement; it was an inventory of the whole ecosystem, hardware included.
The two-tier structure was new. Gold and Silver had let a player catch most of the world in one pair of games, trading locally for the rest. Ruby and Sapphire, cut off from the older cartridges entirely, rebuilt completion as a multi-game, multi-console project, and every generation since has inherited some version of that bargain.
For collectors, the 202 figure is the key to the era's shelf: the GBA cartridges are the center of a system that includes a GameCube, an e-Reader, paper tickets and event visits, and the complete object is the system, not the cartridge.
