How to Collect Frieren
Fifteen volumes, three special editions, and a backlist that never sleeps.
Frieren is a young series with an old series' collecting shape. The Japanese shelf is fifteen volumes (2020 to 2025) plus the anthology; the English shelf is Viz's fourteen, with the fifteenth scheduled for December 2026. The pieces that separate a shelf from a set are the special editions of volumes 12, 14 and 15, each bundled with new prose, and the companion books.
Printings matter quietly here. Viz's volume 1 is routinely sold from later printings, and Japanese volumes have been reprinted relentlessly since 2023. A collector who cares about first printings checks the printing line on the copyright page, Japanese or English, before anything else.
THE SHELF, IN ORDER
What a complete Frieren looks like todayThe fifteen
Japanese volumes 1 to 15, Shōnen Sunday Comics, August 2020 to December 2025. The covers are the gallery page of this shelf, all fifteen verified.
The specials
Special editions of volumes 12, 14 and 15 with their bundled short-story material; volume 14's novella runs 24 pages and is titled.
The companions
The Anthology (2023), the official fanbook (2024), the Prelude novel (2024) and the art book, in that publication order.
THE ENGLISH SHELF
Viz, kept honestFourteen and counting
Viz volumes 1 to 14 are in print in English (to February 2026); volume 15 is scheduled for December 8, 2026. The gap is normal and closing.
Same art, both shelves
Because Viz keeps Abe's paintings, a mixed Japanese-English shelf reads as one shelf. Few modern series allow that.
Chapters ahead of books
The Viz Manga simulpub means the newest story exists in English digitally long before its volume; the print shelf is a record, not a race.
