How to collect the Lupin III manga

With Lupin, the publisher split is the collecting map: Futabasha or Chuokoron-Shinsha tells you what a book is.

Lupin III collecting runs on one unusual fact: the original manga’s collected editions were divided between two publishers. Futabasha serialized the manga in Weekly Manga Action; Chuokoron-Shinsha contested the book rights; the compromise, by Monkey Punch’s own account, was that each house published half. Vintage Japanese volumes therefore come in two families, and the colophon page, not the cover alone, is where an edition identifies itself.

For English buyers the eras are cleaner. A complete original series means the Tokyopop set (2002–2004), adapted from Chuokoron-Shinsha’s 1989 edition; a complete World’s Most Wanted does not exist, because Tokyopop stopped at nine volumes. The Seven Seas hardcovers are the premium modern objects, but they are curated selections with new translations, not reprints of the run, and should be bought as such.

VOLUME 10The Bunko run reaches double figures: small, cheap and complete, the Bunko set is the working collector's way into the original manga.

IDENTIFYING MARKS

What to check
Publisher first
On Japanese volumes, check the publisher’s name and the colophon (okudzuke) for the printing date. Futabasha and Chuokoron-Shinsha books of the same chapters are different editions, not reprints of each other.
The 1989 key
Chuokoron-Shinsha’s 1989 edition is the hinge of the whole bibliography: it is the text Tokyopop translated, so it is the Japanese edition that matches the English set page for page in structure.
Translation generations
English Lupin exists in two translation generations: Tokyopop’s 2000s versions and Seven Seas’ all-new translations for the hardcovers. Side-by-side, the dialogue differs throughout; neither is a reprint of the other.
The Masterpiece route
Futabasha’s Masterpiece Collection (2019, 2021) is the Japanese curated line, and the source of the Seven Seas books. Japanese and English “best of” volumes correspond in concept, which makes cross-checking contents straightforward.

What this archive shows
Covers, verified or text
This archive pictures only covers verified from an opened source, such as the Tokyopop volume 1 in the Gallery. The 1960s Japanese printings are documented in text until their covers can be verified to the same standard; no stand-in art is used.
