What is Yashahime?

The sequel Takahashi designed but did not write: 48 episodes about the daughters, made by the original anime’s returning staff.

Announced in May 2020 and produced by Sunrise, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon aired from October 3, 2020 to March 26, 2022 in two 24-episode seasons, directed by Teruo Sato and then Masakazu Hishida. Its leads are the next generation: Towa and Setsuna, the twin daughters of Sesshomaru, and Moroha, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome. Rumiko Takahashi is the series’ main character designer: the new generation exists first as her drawings.

Around her designs the old production reassembled, writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa, anime character designer Yoshihito Hishinuma, composer Kaoru Wada, and Takahashi and Hishinuma were nominated together for Best Character Design at the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2021. The manga version is a separate work: Takashi Shiina’s adaptation ran in Shonen Sunday S from September 25, 2021 to June 25, 2025.

THE SEQUEL, DOCUMENTED

Sunrise · 2020–22
The Daughters
Towa, raised in the modern era; Setsuna, who lost her memories and her sleep; Moroha, a bounty hunter who grew up alone: the sequel is built from what the parents’ war cost the children.
Takahashi’s Role
Main character designer, not author: her hand is in the faces, while the story belongs to Sumisawa and the Sunrise team.
The Seasons
24 episodes (2020–21) and The Second Act, 24 more (2021–22): 48 in total, a complete two-season arc.
The Shiina Manga
Takashi Shiina’s adaptation (2021–25) retells the story in his own structure: a companion text, not a Takahashi comic.
