Is Dragon Ball worth collecting in Japanese if you do not read it?

Yes, for specific objects rather than the whole run: the kanzenban's new covers and revised ending, the untranslated Daizenshuu and Chozenshu reference shelf, and Full Color volumes are art and reference purchases that English editions cannot substitute.

The case rests on exclusives. Toriyama drew 34 new covers for the kanzenban that exist in no English edition, restored color pages live there at their best, and the manga's revised ending is Japanese-only in print. Six of the seven Daizenshuu and all four Chozenshu were never translated. A collector who buys Japanese Dragon Ball for these objects is buying content, not duplicates, which is the Library's test for any cross-language purchase.

The case against is equally concrete. Standard tankobon duplicate the English singles' content at smaller trim, freight on a 42-volume run is a real share of its cost, and unread books that duplicate a readable shelf tend to become furniture. The honest middle, and the build the Library most often recommends, is selective: kanzenban of the arcs you love, Daizenshuu 1 and 7 or Chozenshu 4 for reference, Jaco and the art-adjacent volumes, and English for everything read cover to cover.

Handling Japanese editions teaches their own literacy: right-to-left reading is the least of it; the wins are learning the okusuke edition page, recognizing obi printings, and reading spine systems at a glance in Japanese shop listings. Dragon Ball is the ideal training series for those skills precisely because its editions are so well documented, in the Daizenshuu themselves and in the Library's edition pages.

Budget framing, in the Library's usual terms: a clean used kanzenban set bought in Japan and shipped consolidated typically lands below the cost of assembling the same quality piecemeal from Western sellers, and it holds value as the recognized definitive edition. Buy the set in one decision or not at all; half a kanzenban run is the worst of both shelves.
