Is the Hellsing live-action movie still happening?
It was announced in March 2021 with real names attached, and nothing public has happened since. Not cancelled, not cast, not dated: silent.
In March 2021, Deadline reported that Amazon Studios was developing a live-action Hellsing feature, written by Derek Kolstad, the creator of John Wick. Kolstad spoke about it on the record, warmly. In the years since, no director, no cast, no production start, and no release window has ever been announced, and no cancellation has been announced either. As of November 2026, that announcement is still the whole story.
WHAT WAS ACTUALLY ANNOUNCED
The March 2021 recordThe writer
Derek Kolstad, who wrote the first three John Wick films and Nobody, was set to write and produce. His quote at the announcement: his brother introduced him to the manga and anime years earlier, and he had been “obsessed with adapting it” since.
The producers
Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber of Ranger 7 Films, and Jason Lust of Soluble Fish, whose rights team had secured the manga. Producer Mike Callaghan called Hirano’s book a gonzo reimagining of the Dracula and Van Helsing mythology.
The studio
Amazon Studios, developing it as a feature film rather than a series. That is the full extent of the public record: a studio, a writer, a producing team, and enthusiasm.
HOW TO READ THE SILENCE
Development, honestly labelledNo news is not a no
Films in development can sit quietly for years and then move fast. Nothing in the public record says the project is dead; Amazon has simply never said another word about it.
What would change the answer
A director announcement, a casting report in the trades, or a production listing. Until one of those exists, every “Hellsing movie” date or cast list circulating online is speculation, including the fan casting that attached itself to the 2021 news.
Meanwhile
Kolstad’s career did not wait: his post-2021 work is documented season by season elsewhere, and none of it is Hellsing. The manga, both anime, and the Deluxe hardcovers remain the complete, finished Hellsing there is.
