Is The Heroic Legend of Arslan finished?
The novel is finished. Everything adapting it is, in one way or another, still catching up.
Arslan exists in four tellings, and they are at four different distances from the ending. Tanaka closed the novels in 2017 after thirty-one years. Every adaptation remains a partial map of a finished country, which is precisely why the franchise keeps being restarted.
FOUR TELLINGS, FOUR ENDINGS
The scorecardThe novels · FINISHED · 2017
Sixteen volumes, complete: volume 16 on December 20, 2017. The only finished Arslan, and, in English, officially unreadable.
Nakamura’s manga · FINISHED, DIFFERENTLY · 1996
Complete at thirteen volumes, but its ending is an invention: the manga outran the novels and concluded a story Tanaka was still writing.
The anime versions · UNFINISHED · 1995 / 2016
The films and OVAs stop at novel five; the TV series at novel six. Twenty-six years of production between them, and neither reached the second half.
Arakawa’s manga · RUNNING
Twenty-five volumes by October 2026 and into its final arc, the first adaptation positioned to actually finish the story it adapts.
