Is There a Live-Action Naruto Movie?

There is no live-action Naruto movie yet. One has been in development at Lionsgate since 2015. Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to write and direct in February 2024, and a worldwide casting search for Team 7 was reported in July 2026. No cast is officially confirmed and no release date exists.

Not yet, and the honest answer requires a decade of development history. Lionsgate acquired the live-action rights and announced the project in 2015, with Michael Gracey attached to direct early on and the Arad family producing. At Jump Festa in December 2016, the production confirmed that Kishimoto himself was involved in developing the film, a detail that has anchored fan patience ever since.

The project took its biggest concrete step in February 2024, when Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, signed on to write and direct, co-writing with Tasha Huo. Kishimoto publicly endorsed the choice. Huo later said the script was finished, but Cretton's schedule, including his Spider-Man commitments, slowed the path to production through 2025.

In July 2026, industry coverage reported that Lionsgate had opened a worldwide casting search for the young leads, Team 7, the clearest sign yet that the film is moving toward cameras. Trade reporting in August 2026 linked Charles Melton to the role of Kakashi in final talks; Lionsgate did not comment, so the Library records that as reported, not confirmed. There is still no announced release date and no officially confirmed cast.

What is confirmed, and what is not

This page separates three grades of information. Confirmed by studios or trades: the Lionsgate rights, Cretton directing and co-writing, Kishimoto's involvement and endorsement, the 2026 casting search. Reported but unconfirmed: individual casting talks. Rumor tier: plot summaries and titles circulating from scooper accounts, which the Library does not treat as news. The line matters because Naruto's live-action project has generated a decade of confident falsehoods.

Why the Library tracks it

A live-action adaptation, if it reaches release, will do what every adaptation wave does to this shelf: send new readers to volume 1, new viewers to episode 1, and new collectors to the objects documented across this section. The Library's interest in the project is exactly that: it is a future demand event for physical Naruto, tracked here as it develops.
