Is there a Mew under the truck in Vermilion City?

No. The truck is decoration, and the rumor outlived the dock it sits on.

The truck is real, which is why the rumor worked. Moored near the SS Anne in Vermilion City sits a lone truck sprite, reachable with Surf, in a game where almost every visible object means something. A generation of players concluded it had to hide Mew, and tried Strength, keys, and every sequence of moves the playground could invent.

None of it works, because there is nothing under the truck: no Mew, no item, no event. The truck is set dressing placed by the developers with no function attached, in a game whose code has since been picked apart completely. Mew itself was real but lived elsewhere, in contest distributions that began with twenty copies through CoroCoro Comic.

Game Freak eventually winked at the legend. In the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes, an item, a Lava Cookie, sits hidden near the truck, the developers' small acknowledgment of the most famous patch of empty ground in the series.

The truck is worth documenting precisely because it does nothing: it is the best evidence of how completely players believed the first games hid secrets everywhere, a belief the games' real glitches and the genuine Mew scarcity made entirely reasonable.
