Katsuya Terada Real Size

Every drawing in Real Size was made in a single pass with one black marker, and the book prints details at the size he actually drew them.

The Japanese edition, Terada Katsuya Gensun ('actual size'), appeared from PIE International in April 2019; the publisher's international edition followed on October 1, 2019 (ISBN 978-4-7562-5187-9), priced by PIE at ¥3,600 in Japan (about $33 at the time) and $49.95 in the United States. It collects over 150 one-shot drawings, each made using only a black marker with no rough draft underneath, many of them the large works from his exhibitions and live drawing events.

The design of the book is the idea in its title. Each piece is shown whole at reduced size, then shown again in part at 100 percent, real size, so the reader sees both the composition and the actual pressure and speed of the marker line. The hardcover is a wide, short slab, about 302 by 176 millimeters, with fold-out spreads, built to be opened flat and stared at.

It is the live-drawing act fixed in print, and the companion shelf piece to RakugaKing: that book proved how much he draws; this one proves he does it without a net.
