What Are Langrisser III, IV and V?
Three Saturn games Japan kept: a prequel, a branching sequel, and a finale.
When Langrisser moved to the Sega Saturn, it left the West behind for good. Langrisser III (1996), IV (1997), and V: The End of Legend (1998) were never officially localized, and between them they contain some of the series’ boldest experiments: a prequel about the creation of the sword itself, a sequel whose hero is built by questionnaire, and a finale that closes the whole saga. All three were made by Career Soft for Masaya, III while the team was still becoming independent, IV and V as its own studio.
This page documents the three games one by one, from the sources that survive, and explains the shape of the Saturn years as a whole.
LANGRISSER III
Saturn · 1996 · the prequelThe story before
III is a prequel to the first two games, telling how the sword Langrisser was created, and setting up the genealogies that dominate the series. It is set before even the Elthlead games.
A different engine
The first 32-bit Langrisser abandons commander-by-commander tactics for mass battles: a commander’s whole platoon clashes with the enemy’s at once. Fans still argue about it.
The relationship system
III added a relationship system in the manner of a dating simulation: your choices change how the heroines feel about the hero, and the ending pairs him with the one closest to him.
The object
The limited edition came with an art book and a holographic cover. A PlayStation 2 version by X-Nauts and Taito followed in 2005, and a complete fan translation finally arrived in 2026.
LANGRISSER IV
Saturn · August 1, 1997 · the questionnaireYeless, 200 years on
Two centuries after Erwin sealed the two swords, the story moves to the western continent of Yeless, where the wizard Gizlof builds an army of clones, modified humans, and a piloted Guyframe, the ancient mech line from Team Career’s 1990 game.
Built by answers
The hero Randius’ class growth is decided by a questionnaire at the start of the game, an ancestor of the personality-test openings later RPGs made famous.
Three paths
Like Der Langrisser before it, IV branches: Light, Chaos, or Independence, with Randius’ foster sister Rachel standing on different sides of the war depending on the road.
The diary
An in-game development diary dates the work precisely: development ran from October 1996 to June 8, 1997. The PlayStation port arrived January 28, 1999, inside IV & V: Final Edition, and has a fan translation.
LANGRISSER V
Saturn · 1998 · The End of LegendThe direct sequel
V opens shortly after IV ends, on the same continent and cast, the only true two-part story in the classic series. Development ran from July 1997 to March 1998.
The farewell
It is the last Langrisser by the team that created the series. Career Soft’s future was Growlanser at Atlus; Masaya’s, the Millennium games by another studio.
Japan only
V has never been released outside Japan, in any form, to this day. Noriyuki Iwadare’s score closed the classic series where it began, with its first composer.
WHY THE WEST MISSED THEM
The Saturn divideOne and done
The series article’s verdict is stark: until 2016, Warsong was the only Langrisser officially localized into English. The Saturn trilogy was never even attempted.
The fan era
English arrived by patch instead: IV’s PlayStation version first, and III’s Saturn original only in 2026, thirty years after release.
