What Strategy Guides Were Published for Langrisser?

Japan published shelf after shelf of Langrisser guides. America, which got exactly one game, got none.

Langrisser is a series built on hidden information: class trees with secret top classes, items buried in scenarios, and, in Der Langrisser, a branching story that no single playthrough can map. Japan’s publishers answered with one of the deepest guide benches of any 1990s tactical series: at least seventeen official guide books are documented across Sega Retro’s book index and Japanese retail records, from the Mega Drive originals to the Millennium games.

These books are now primary sources. The class charts, path diagrams, and data tables in them are the ones the fan translation community worked from for decades, and they remain the fullest printed record of how these games actually work. This page is the shelf list.

THE KEY BOOK

Der Langrisser Hisshou Kouryaku Hou · 1995
The branching atlas
Futabasha’s winning-strategy volume for the Super Famicom remake, in its Perfect Strategy series: 127 pages, published for the game’s 1995 launch, listed by Suruga-ya at 1,400 yen.
The diagram
Its centerpiece is the complete branching diagram of Der Langrisser’s four paths, with the class charts and the hidden classes for every character: the map of a game designed to be unmapped.
The afterlife
Fan translators kept a copy open for years. One translator’s notes describe learning the game’s secrets from this book, down to a previous owner’s handwritten path diagram tucked inside it.

GAME BY GAME

The bench, title by title
Langrisser II · Mega Drive
Langrisser II Hisshou Kouryaku Hou, the winning-strategy book for the 1994 original.
Langrisser III · Saturn
Three books: the Game Guide Book, the Tactics Guide, and Shogakukan’s Capture Guidebook, dated December 10, 1996 in retail records. The series was now big enough to compete with itself in print.
Langrisser IV · Saturn
The deepest bench of any single game: a Game Guide Book, a Hisshou Kouryaku Hou, a Kanzen Kouryaku Ban (complete strategy edition), The Tactics, a Victory Capture volume from Futaba dated September 10, 1997, and the collector’s favorite, the Kouryaku & Visual File.
The IV guide in hand
The commonly exported IV guide runs 160 pages, mostly in color: character profiles, a system guide, scenario guides with maps, and a data section, at pocket-book size.
Langrisser V · Saturn
Four books close the classic series: a Game Guide Book, a Hisshou Kouryaku Hou, a Kouryaku Guide, and Perfect Tactics from MediaWorks, dated July 10, 1998.
The remakes and Millennium
Dramatic Edition received both a Hisshou Kouryaku Hou and a Saikyou Kouryaku Guide (strongest strategy guide), and Langrisser Millennium a Saikyou Kouryaku Guide of its own. The Langrisser IV & V Official Strategy Guide is the reference the series’ modern wiki cites for its data.

THE ENGLISH GAP

Guides that never crossed
No English shelf
Every official Langrisser guide on record is Japanese. Warsong, the one game America received, has no official English guide book: its secrets traveled by magazine tips and, later, by FAQ.
Why collectors care
Because the data lived in these books, the books became the data: a Der Langrisser or Langrisser IV collection is not complete without its guides, and the Visual File volumes double as art books. The Library’s wider shelf is the strategy guides gallery.
