Lupin the Third Part 5: the French homecoming
The grandson finally goes home: France, where the name was born and once banned to him.
Part 5 aired on NTV from April 4 to September 18, 2018: 24 episodes (plus a bonus OVA episode) set in France, the home of the original Arsène Lupin. The blue jacket stayed, but the season is built as a tour of the whole wardrobe’s history: individual episodes openly homage earlier eras, and the sixth episode is a deliberate valentine to the pink-jacket Part III.
The France setting closes a fifty-year circle. The country where Monkey Punch’s title could not legally be used, where Lupin VIII died over the estate’s fee, and where the anime had to be renamed Edgar, Detective Cambrioleur, became the stage for the most self-aware series of the modern run. The English dub, like Part IV’s, aired on Toonami.
A SEASON OF HOMAGES
2018Episode 6
The Part III tribute: period designs, gag physics, and the pink era’s energy recreated by a staff that plainly loves the franchise’s strangest child.
The anniversary short
The season’s home-video sets carried Is Lupin Still Burning?, the memorial episode restaging Part I’s debut with Monkey Punch himself as general director.
