What was Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate?

Tri, completed: the expansion that carried the third generation onto the 3DS and gave the West its first HD hunt.

Japan received Monster Hunter 3G for the Nintendo 3DS on December 10, 2011, the series’ debut on Nintendo’s handheld, with the cut weapons of Tri restored and underwater combat intact. A high-definition Wii U edition followed in Japan in December 2012, and the pair reached the West as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in March 2013, the first HD Monster Hunter released outside Japan.

Its flagship was new: Brachydios, a brute wyvern that punches the ground and leaves explosive slime on its fists, a design built to be read at a glance. Between the two versions the game sold 2.6 million copies, and its touch-screen targeting and portable-to-console save sharing quietly sketched the hybrid future the Switch would later make normal.

WHY IT MATTERED

The bridge edition
Two screens, one hunter
The 3DS and Wii U versions shared save data, an early sketch of play-anywhere design, years before the Switch made it a platform promise.
The target cam
3 Ultimate’s lock-on camera compromise, built for a handheld with one stick, taught the series how to serve players who could not yet work a free camera.
A Western foothold
For many players outside Japan, this was the first Monster Hunter that felt made for them: HD at home, portable on the train, one save between them.
