Who is the flagship monster of every Monster Hunter game?

Twenty years of cover stars, and the first one never really left: Rathalos opened the series and remains its emblem.

Every Monster Hunter crowns a flagship: the monster on the box, in the trailer, and at the centre of the story. The flagship is the generation’s design manifesto in one animal, which makes the full line a history of the series in silhouettes, from the classic wyvern silhouette of 2004 to the extinct, chain-draped Arkveld of 2025.

The choice is also marketing: flagships front the limited-edition consoles, the statues, and the amiibo. When Capcom wants you to remember a generation, it shows you one monster.

THE CENSUS

Every cover star
2004–2006 · The PS2 years
Rathalos (Monster Hunter, G), then Kushala Daora, the steel elder dragon of Dos. The red wyvern set the template; the metal dragon announced stranger things.
2005–2008 · The PSP years
Rathalos carried Freedom; Tigrex, a roaring pseudo-wyvern, took Freedom 2; Nargacuga, all black fur and red eyes, fronted Freedom Unite.
2009–2012 · The third generation
Lagiacrus for Tri, Zinogre for Portable 3rd, Brachydios for 3 Ultimate. Flagships now sold a biome: sea, storm, and slime.
2013–2017 · The fourth generation
Gore Magala for 4, Seregios for 4 Ultimate, and Generations’ Fated Four sharing the crown, with Valstrax, a rocket-propelled elder dragon, heading XX and Ultimate.
2018–2023 · The global era
Nergigante (World), Velkhana (Iceborne), Magnamalo (Rise), and Malzeno (Sunbreak): spikes, ice, hellfire, and blood, escalating with the audience.
2025 · Wilds
Arkveld, the White Wraith: a flagship presented as an extinct species returned, its wing-arms trailing chains. The series’ mystery box made into a monster.
