How many Monster Hunter games are there?

Six mainline generations, about a dozen core releases, and more than forty titles once expansions, spinoffs, and mobile games are counted.

The honest count depends on where you draw the line. Capcom’s own sales ledger tracks 21 releases sold in units. The mainline spine is shorter: the numbered console line runs Monster Hunter (2004), Dos (2006), Tri (2009), 4 (2013), World (2018), and Wilds (2025), six generations, with the handheld Freedom and Generations lines woven between them.

Around that spine sits everything else: the expanded editions (G, Freedom Unite, 3 Ultimate, 4 Ultimate, Generations Ultimate), two giant expansions (Iceborne, Sunbreak), a twelve-year MMO (Frontier), a turn-based RPG trilogy (Stories), and a long tail of mobile games. Count every shelf and the series passes forty releases.

THE SPINE

Six generations
First generation · 2004–2006
Monster Hunter, G, and Dos on PlayStation 2, plus the first PSP game, Freedom. The era that invented the loop and the right-stick controls it later abandoned.
Second generation · 2006–2008
The PSP takes over in Japan: Freedom 2 and Freedom Unite, with Frontier opening online in 2007. This is the generation of the Japanese phenomenon.
Third generation · 2009–2012
Tri on Wii, Portable 3rd on PSP, 3 Ultimate on 3DS and Wii U. Underwater combat arrives, and leaves, inside this single generation.
Fourth generation · 2013–2018
Monster Hunter 4 and Generations on 3DS: mounting, vertical maps, Hunting Styles. The last generation built for one country first.
Fifth generation · 2018–2023
World, Iceborne, Rise, Sunbreak. Simultaneous global launches, PC as a first-class platform, and sales an order of magnitude larger.
Sixth generation · 2025–
Wilds opens it with cross-play, seamless maps, and herds of monsters at once, with its Ascendance expansion announced for 2027.
