What is Monster Hunter World: Iceborne?

An expansion the size of a sequel, and the return of G-rank under a new name: Master Rank.

Iceborne reached consoles on September 6, 2019 and PC in January 2020, continuing World’s story into the Hoarfrost Reach, a frozen continent hidden behind the sea. It restored the series’ traditional third difficulty tier, renamed Master Rank, and gave every weapon new moves built around the Clutch Claw, a grappling tool that lets hunters wound monsters and steer them into walls.

Its flagship, the ice elder dragon Velkhana, froze the air itself. Iceborne then ran a year of free title updates that re-introduced a procession of returning legends, closing in October 2020 with Fatalis, the original black dragon, in a finale scored by the series anthem. It sold 16.7 million copies, numbers most full games never reach.

THE ICEBORNE STANDARD

Expansions, redefined
A second continent, not a map pack
Hoarfrost Reach shipped with its own ecosystem, endemic life, and the Guiding Lands endgame beyond it. Reviewers measured it against sequels, not DLC.
Seliana
The expansion’s hub, a hot-spring town built into a mountainside, is regularly cited among the series’ most beloved bases: functional, warm, and alive.
The long goodbye
Iceborne’s update calendar kept World the centre of the series for three years, and its Master Edition bundle is how most new hunters still arrive.

THE COVER

Worldwide art
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne key art, 2019
Iceborne · Key art · 2019
Velkhana descends through blue ice toward fur-wrapped hunters: the expansion’s cover is a portrait of cold itself.
The flagship as weather
Velkhana’s ice sheathes the entire top of the frame. Like Tri’s water, the element shares the billing.
From behind, again
As with World, the hunter is shown from the back, mid-approach: the global-era covers put the viewer in the hunt, facing the animal.
