What is Monster Hunter Now?

The hunt, mapped onto your own streets: Niantic’s AR version, downloaded more than 15 million times.

Monster Hunter Now, built by Niantic with Capcom, launched in September 2023: an augmented-reality game in the Pokémon GO mould, in which monsters appear in your real neighbourhood, hunts last seconds-to-minutes, and weapons and armor are forged from what your walks provide. Capcom has reported more than 15 million cumulative downloads, and the game runs seasonal events and collaborations, including a headline MrBeast event in 2024.

Now is the survivor of a long mobile line. The series reached phones early with Dynamic Hunting on iOS in 2011, ran the original-character RPG Explore (source of the one-off Accel Axe weapon) and the companion title Riders, both since closed, and most recently added Tencent TiMi’s Monster Hunter Outlanders. The pattern is consistent: the mobile games live fast, and the cartridge-and-console bestiary is what endures.

THE MOBILE LEDGER

Fast lives
The GO formula, adapted honestly
Now trims hunts to about 75 seconds and keeps the armoury real: fourteen weapons, gear skills, and monsters with their true behaviours, shrunk to a walk.
Explore and Riders
Japan-first mobile originals that built their own audiences and closed within the decade, taking exclusive content with them. Frontier’s lesson, at pocket scale.
Outlanders
The newest mobile entry, a fuller open-world take developed by TiMi, extends the line’s reach in Asia, where the series’ mobile audience has always concentrated.
