Why is Rathalos the face of Monster Hunter?
Because he was first, because every generation keeps him, and because a red wyvern breathing fire is the whole series in one image.
Rathalos was the flagship of the original 2004 game, the monster on the box and in the logo-adjacent art, and Capcom has kept him at the centre ever since. ‘King of the Skies’, a territorial flying wyvern that patrols from altitude and answers intruders with fireballs and poison talons, he is fought, in some form, in effectively every Monster Hunter ever made, alongside his green mate, Rathian, the ‘Queen of the Land’.
His reach now extends well past the series. Rathalos descends as a boss and Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018), stars as the crossover trial in Final Fantasy XIV, and fronted the 2020 live-action film’s marketing. In Japan his name is Liolaeus, and the country’s limited-edition PlayStation 4 Pro wore his silhouette. When the world thinks of Monster Hunter, it pictures this dragon.
