What is Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak?

Rise’s Master Rank expansion, staged as a gothic hunt: a knightly outpost, a vampire dragon, and monsters falling from the sky.

Sunbreak launched on June 30, 2022, carrying Rise’s hunters across the sea to Elgado, a maritime outpost of the Royal Order, to face the Three Lords: the werewolf-like Lunagaron, the armoured Garangolm, and their sovereign, Malzeno, an elder dragon modelled on a vampire count, draining the life of its prey through swarms of symbiotic Qurio leeches.

Mechanically it deepened everything Rise sketched: the Switch Skill Swap lets hunters carry two move sets and trade them mid-fight, and Follower quests let beloved story characters join solo hunts, a first for the series. Sunbreak sold 11.9 million copies, an extraordinary figure for an expansion that requires its base game, and its title updates ran deep into 2023.

THE GOTHIC TURN

Sunbreak’s flavour
The Citadel and the Forlorn Arena
Ruined castles and drowned battlements gave Sunbreak the darkest stages of the fifth generation, staged like a Hammer horror film.
The Qurio
The expansion’s crimson parasites drive its afflicted-monster endgame, mutating familiar hunts into the Anomaly grind that replaced the Rampage.
Primordial Malzeno
The final title update restored Malzeno’s original, un-infected form as the expansion’s last duel, one of the most praised fights in the series.
