What is Monster Hunter Wilds?

The sixth generation: the fastest launch Capcom has ever had, a seamless weather-beaten wild, and a harder second year than anyone forecast.

Monster Hunter Wilds launched on February 28, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, the first entry with full cross-play from day one. Directed by Yuya Tokuda with series creator Kaname Fujioka as executive director, it pushes World’s living-ecosystem ambition further: herds of monsters moving as packs, dynamic weather that transforms a map mid-hunt, and the mountable Seikret, a bird wyvern that carries hunters and a second weapon. Its flagship is Arkveld, the White Wraith, a chained wyvern once thought extinct.

The launch rewrote Capcom’s record book: 8 million copies in three days, 10 million within a month, the fastest-selling game in the company’s history. Then it cooled. PC performance problems dogged its first year and Capcom’s president publicly pointed to the PlayStation 5’s price as a barrier; by mid-2026 Wilds stood at 11.8 million, a giant total and a flattened curve. A Switch 2 edition arrives December 4, 2026, and the announced expansion, Ascendance, opens a floating archipelago, the Skybound Eyrie, in 2027.

THE WILDS DEBATE

Records and reckoning
Focus Mode
Wilds’ headline system lets hunters aim attacks precisely at wounds, which burst for damage and resources: the series’ most direct targeting ever.
The performance argument
Few modern blockbusters split their audience like Wilds did: adored hunts, contested frame rates. Its update roadmap became a rolling apology and repair programme.
Herds as design
Producer Tsujimoto described the aim as rendering a nature documentary you can fight: packs that flee, feud, and stampede, weather as a co-author of every hunt.

THE COVER

Worldwide art
Monster Hunter Wilds key art, 2025
Wilds · Key art · 2025
Arkveld’s chained wing-arm sweeps the whole cover while the White Wraith roars over the grassland: the sixth generation’s portrait.
The chain as a graphic device
Arkveld’s chains arc across the logo itself, the rare cover where the monster’s defining trait becomes the design’s structure.
Golden grass, not green forest
Wilds’ key art stands in dry grass under hard sun, announcing the Forbidden Lands’ climate before a single trailer is watched.
