How many versions of Ancient Mew are there?
Ancient Mew was first a Japanese cinema pamphlet card. It was included in the pamphlets sold at cinemas for The Power of One from July 17, 1999, and the first print run carries the most famous typo in the hobby: the copyright line on the border misspells Nintendo as "Nintedo." A corrected print followed, briefly, with the same sparkly speckle foil as the first, and then a third Japanese print switched to the smoother cosmos foil. Collectors call the speckle prints Ancient Mew I and the cosmos print Ancient Mew II; of the three, the corrected speckle print is the one that had the shortest life and is the hardest to find.
The international print of 2000, given with tickets in America and elsewhere in the film's first week, uses the cosmos foil too, but it is not the Japanese card in English dress. Its copyright line adds Wizards of the Coast, its copyright type sits in a different font, and its patterned border is stronger and stops short of the card edge, where the Japanese border runs to a wider, thinner frame. The copyright line settles every argument: Japanese prints read "© 1995, 1996, 1998 Nintendo/Creatures inc./GAMEFREAK inc." (or Nintedo), while the international print reads "© 1995, 96, 98, 99 Nintendo, Creatures, GAMEFREAK. © 1999-2000 Wizards."
Twenty years later the card came home. A 2019 Japanese reprint, speckle foil restored, was included in pamphlets for the remake Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution from July 12, 2019, and a Korean print followed the same way in 2020. Both announce themselves in their copyright years, and the 2019 card even edits the ancient text, as the main Ancient Mew page in this shelf describes.
