What changed in the 2024 Ranma 1/2 remake?
The new Ranma 1/2 premiered in October 2024, produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by Konosuke Uda, known for long runs on One Piece. Where the 1989 series was a Kitty Films and Studio Deen production that expanded Takahashi's manga with filler, the remake was announced as a fresh adaptation of the manga itself, with Takahashi publicly supportive of the project.
The casting decision made headlines in Japan: the principal voice actors returned. Kappei Yamaguchi again plays male Ranma, Megumi Hayashibara plays female Ranma, and Noriko Hidaka returns as Akane, with much of the surviving original cast around them. Roles whose actors had died, including Nabiki's original voice, were recast with care and announced openly.
Visually the remake is a different object from the 1989 series. MAPPA's production uses clean digital lines, brighter color and fight animation built for modern streaming, and it adapts manga arcs in manga order at a brisk pace, restoring jokes and scenes the first anime altered for its broadcast slot.
The remake streams worldwide on Netflix with a weekly release pattern unusual for the platform, and a second season followed in 2025, continuing deeper into the manga. Its success reactivated the whole Ranma catalog: manga reprints, merchandise and renewed attention to the 1989 series' home video sets.
For the Library's collecting angle, the remake matters as a dividing line. Material now sorts into three eras, Takahashi's manga originals, the Kitty and Deen screen era of 1989 to 2008, and the MAPPA era, and prices and demand for period goods shifted noticeably once the remake put the cast back in front of a global audience.
