Who lives at the Tendo dojo?
The Tendo dojo, a martial arts hall attached to a family home in Tokyo's Nerima ward, is the fixed stage of Ranma 1/2. Soun Tendo, a widower and master of the Anything Goes school, receives his old training partner Genma Saotome and Genma's son Ranma, and announces that one of his three daughters will marry Ranma to unite the schools and secure the dojo's future.
The daughters define the household's tones. Kasumi, the eldest, is serenely domestic and untouchable by the chaos. Nabiki, the middle daughter, treats everything, including Ranma's curse and her own family's crises, as a business opportunity, selling photos and information with a bookmaker's calm. Akane, the youngest, is a strong martial artist with a temper, a terrible cooking record and the engagement she never asked for.
Ranma and Akane's arrangement is the series' engine. Both reject it loudly, both defend it instinctively, and the household watches the contradiction for 38 volumes. Takahashi is careful to give Akane real martial standing: she is the dojo's heir in skill, and her pride in that is the wound Ranma's casual superiority keeps reopening.
Nerima itself is part of the cast. The dojo, Furinkan High School and the neighborhood's canals, baths and shopping streets form a walkable map that the anime staff reproduced faithfully, and real Nerima locations became fan pilgrimage points during the series' peak years.
The household structure is what separates Takahashi's manga from its adaptations' reputations. Screen versions foreground fights and fanservice; the manga's center of gravity is this house, its meals, its debts and its two stubborn teenagers, and the dojo is where every wandering plot returns to reset.
