How do Ranma's Japanese and English covers compare?

Early Viz editions mirrored Takahashi's art for left to right reading; later unflipped editions and the 2-in-1 omnibus restored the original covers and orientation.

Ranma 1/2 was one of the test cases of English language manga publishing, and its covers record that history. Viz first published the series in the early 1990s in American comic format and then in graphic novels that read left to right, which required mirroring Takahashi's artwork. On those covers and pages, every image is flipped: hair parts, clothing closures and the dojo itself all face the wrong way.

The Japanese tankobon covers are the reference point: Takahashi's original illustrations, unmirrored, with Shogakukan's period typography. Comparing a flipped Viz cover with its Japanese source is the clearest classroom example of what the flipping era did to manga art, and Ranma, as one of the longest flipped series, shows it at scale.

Viz's later editions corrected the record. The unflipped reissue of the graphic novels restored right to left reading for the series' second half of the run and then the earlier volumes, and the 2014 to 2017 two in one omnibus edition presented the whole manga unflipped with covers built from Takahashi's original art, giving English readers a uniform, faithful set at last.

The flop had one more consequence collectors notice: flipped era merchandise and promotional art in North America sometimes used mirrored images, so period posters and ads can show the cast reversed against their Japanese counterparts. It is an era marker, not a defect, and it dates a piece instantly.

The Library documents covers as documented so far: original Japanese art first, then each English treatment, so that a buyer comparing a Japanese volume 12 with an English volume 12 can see which printing, orientation and cover crop they are actually holding.
