Ranma ½ in English: The Flipped Years

Viz published Ranma from 1992 to 2006, its longest-running manga of the era, with the art mirrored. The art was only set right in 2014.

Viz released Ranma ½ in a monthly comic-book format, two chapters per issue, from 1992 to 2003, with the artwork flipped to read left-to-right, mirroring every page. The collected graphic novels eventually spanned 36 volumes, the last released on November 14, 2006: over thirteen years in print, which made it Viz’s longest-running manga series to that point. In March 2004 the line was reprinted in a smaller format with different covers and a lower price, content unchanged.

The repair came at Anime Expo on July 7, 2013, when Viz announced a 2-in-1 edition restoring the original right-to-left reading order for the first time in North America. The nineteen books ran from March 11, 2014 to March 14, 2017; the complete set went digital on July 27, 2021. Madman Entertainment publishes the 2-in-1 edition in Australasia.

Viz Media, 1992–2017
The Monthly Years · 1992–2003

Every page mirrored to run left-to-right. Scars, handedness, signs and clothing details all read backward in the entire first English edition.
Thirty-Six Volumes · to 2006
The graphic novels regroup the 38 Japanese volumes into 36; the difference is bundling, not missing story.
The 2004 Reprints
Smaller trim, new covers, lower price, same flipped pages: a mid-run format change that splits first-edition shelves into two shapes.
The Restoration · 2014–17
