What is the Ranma 1/2 manga?

It is Rumiko Takahashi's martial arts romantic comedy about a boy who turns into a girl in cold water, told in short arcs across 38 Japanese volumes.

Ranma 1/2 is a manga by Rumiko Takahashi, serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday from August 1987 to March 1996 and collected in 38 tankobon volumes in Japan. Coming after Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, it fused the two modes Takahashi had mastered: science fiction style chaos and a slow burning domestic romance.

The premise is a curse with rules. Teenage martial artist Ranma Saotome fell into a spring at Jusenkyo in China and now changes into a girl when splashed with cold water, returning with hot water. His father Genma, who fell into a neighboring spring, becomes a panda. The comedy engine is water itself, which is everywhere: rain, kettles, pools, rivals with kettles of their own.

The story is structured as a chain of short arcs. A new rival, curse, technique or fiancee arrives, the Tendo dojo erupts, and the status quo resets with the relationships slightly rearranged. Underneath the resets, the central bond between Ranma and Akane Tendo, his unwilling fiancee by family arrangement, develops in small increments that the comedy protects from resolving too soon.

Takahashi drew the series at the height of her powers, and its fight choreography is genuinely inventive: battles fought on ice, on tabletops, with rhythmic gymnastics tools and cooking equipment, each arc inventing a martial art absurd enough to house a joke and a character beat at once.

The manga sold more than 55 million copies and became one of the defining titles of its era. Its full run is the complete version of the story: unlike the 1989 anime, which ended early, the manga carries Ranma and Akane through the final arcs, including the trip back to Jusenkyo and the wedding finale.
